Check the meeting before the day
Confirm the date, time zone, platform and expected duration. Open the invitation early enough to discover whether you need an application, account or browser permission. Test the microphone, speaker and camera using the platform’s available checks. Charge the device and keep the charger accessible.
If you are using a shared device or a workplace account, consider privacy and permissions before joining. Keep an agreed recruiter or interviewer contact available outside the meeting platform. Do not wait for a connection failure to discover that your only contact method is inside the disconnected call.
Make the space support the conversation
Choose the quietest practical place and position the camera at a comfortable height. Light your face from the front where possible. Keep the background simple and move private documents out of view. You do not need a staged office or expensive equipment.
Close unrelated applications and notifications. Keep your CV and a few notes within reach, but avoid reading answers from another screen. If other people share the space, let them know the timing. If an interruption happens, acknowledge it briefly and return to the conversation rather than apologising repeatedly.
Agree a sensible backup
Where power or connectivity could be unreliable, prepare what is reasonably available: a charged phone, enough mobile data if you plan to use it, and a way to contact the interviewer. Test any backup you intend to rely on. Do not promise a technical arrangement you cannot provide.
If the call drops, try the agreed recovery step and send a short update. If the connection remains poor, ask whether continuing by phone or rescheduling would be more useful. For a technical assessment, clarify whether changing the format affects the task before proceeding.
PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
A clear message after a dropped call
“Hello [name], my connection dropped during our interview. I am trying to rejoin now. If the connection remains unstable, I can be reached on [number]. Please let me know whether you would prefer a phone call or a new time.” Keep the message factual and use the contact channel agreed beforehand.
Your practical checklist
- Confirm the time zone and meeting link.
- Test audio, camera and platform access.
- Charge devices and prepare an appropriate backup.
- Keep the interviewer’s contact details accessible.
Take it forward
The goal is a workable conversation, not a perfect room. Good preparation and calm communication are more useful than trying to hide every possible interruption.
